Knit and Crochet Blog Week - Day One

I had already written a similar post here (in Portuguese).
Today's post is intended to participate in the Knit and Crochet blog Week.

Today's question:
How and when did you begin knitting/crocheting? was it a skill passed down through generations of your family, or something you learned from Knitting For Dummies? What or who made you pick up the needles/hook for the first time? Was it the celebrity knitting ‘trend’ or your great aunt Hilda? TAGGING CODE: knitcroblo1

When I was a child my mother taught me to knit and purl, cast on and cast off. Nothing fancy only the basics.
I wanted to learn how to knit sweaters (could have started with simple scarves...).
My childhood friends mother taught me. She taught me a very simple way to knit sweaters starting at the front, rising to the sleeves and going back. We were in the 80’s and big sweaters were in fashion!
Only later, with nearly 20 years old, I began learning other techniques, other more beautiful ways to cast on and off, add colour, cables and sewing.
I knit this jacket when I was about 20 years.
After that I spent many years without knitting. From time to time the desire to get back to the needles came back, but nothing serious.
It was with my third pregnancy that I dedicated myself to knitting again.
I started by wanting to knit baby bootees. So I found on the Internet the help I no longer had. Discovered the wonderful blogland and the most fabulous knitting sites. Of course I’m a Portuguese knitter so everything I see on the Internet must be converted to our way of knitting. You can see here how I knit and how I purl .
Today I’m a stay home Mum with three young children and I can say that the knitting and the Internet changed my life. I have taught knitting workshops frequently and would love to continue to do so.
After two generations of women who (for social reasons as well as other) no longer do this kind of handicrafts, the knitting is re-appearing in the habits of Portuguese women (and even some men).
Thanks for reading my post. Any correction to English please do not hesitate! I'll be forever grateful.
